A discussion meeting on the changes and changing contexts for complaints and appeals was held on 18 September at the Holiday Inn, Regent’s Park, London and attracted nearly 200 delegates.
David Cairns and Sarah Butler from QAA’s Development and Enhancement Group commenced proceedings by addressing concerns raised during the consultation period and thanking everyone from across the sector and beyond for their contributions.
Presentations by Susanna Reece from the Office of the Independent Adjudicator, Sarah Bogunovic from the Scottish Public Service Ombudsman Outreach Team, Professor GR Evans from the ‘Improving Dispute Resolution’ project, Gary Attle from law firm Mills & Reeve, Siân Jones-Davies from Eversheds and Mandi Barron, Assistant Registrar at Bournemouth University, followed and covered topics such as mediation, the value of complaints, the ‘duty to act fairly’ and the possibility of a Special Interest Group for HE staff handling complaints and appeals.
The day finished with the formation of breakout groups, giving the delegates an opportunity to share their own experiences and raise issues they have encountered.
