Dear colleague
Second edition of the Handbook for academic review
I am pleased to enclose the Handbook for academic review: England, 2004 (the Handbook). This revised edition of the Handbook covers QAA’s review of directly-funded higher education in further education colleges in England during 2004-06.
The Handbook does not change the method of academic review of subjects. Instead, we have taken the opportunity to remove those sections of the original which are no longer in use (for example, sections on the application of academic review at the institutional level), to reflect current practice in the application of the method and to describe it in ways that are more relevant for higher education in further education colleges.
The Handbook is being distributed to the heads of all further education colleges (FECs) in England which offer directly-funded higher education. It is also being sent to the heads of all higher education institutions, for information only, because it is not, at present, possible to target it towards just those institutions that have validation arrangements with FECs for directly-funded provision.
I hope that the second edition of the Handbook will be a valuable source of information and guidance. If you have any comments or queries about the Handbook, please contact my colleagues Alexa Christou, Assistant Director a.christou@qaa.ac.uk and Derek Greenaway, Development Officer, d.greenaway@qaa.ac.uk in the first instance.
Yours sincerely
