Dear Colleague

Draft revised Code of practice for the assurance of academic quality and standards
in higher education
(the Code of practice), Section 6: Assessment of students, Section 7: Programme design, approval, monitoring and review and Section 10: Admissions to higher education

As part of QAA's continuing work to revise sections of the Code of practice, I am enclosing draft proposals for the three sections above; these can also be found on the website at:

The drafts have been prepared with the help of representatives from higher education institutions and professional, statutory and regulatory bodies, taking account of the views of the Better Regulation Task Force and its successors, the Better Regulation Review Group and Higher Education Regulation Review Group.

The advice provided by the above groups has led us to replace the ‘guidance' sections of the respective sections of the Code of practice with explanations indicating why the individual precepts are thought to be important. We hope that these changes will help to emphasise that the Code of practice does not require compliance by institutions but is a document that provides reference to widely agreed approaches to accepted academic practice.

Consultation events, in the form of round table meetings, have taken place in respect of three of these sections of the Code of practice. An additional meeting to enable colleagues to contribute further views on the draft of Section 6: Assessment of students was held on 23 January 2006.

In accordance with QAA's normal practice, we want to ensure that all institutions have an opportunity to see and, if they wish to, comment on the draft. There is no obligation on you to respond, but any comments you provide will be taken into account when the final version is prepared.

We should be grateful if any responses could be made by no later than Friday 24 March 2006. Please reply to Gill Clarke (g.clarke@qaa.ac.uk) in respect of Assessment of students; to Fiona Crozier (f.crozier@qaa.ac.uk) in respect of Programme design, approval, monitoring and review; an d to Janet Bohrer (j.bohrer@qaa.ac.uk) in respect of Admissions to higher education.

Yours sincerely
