How are the tools for maintaining academic quality and standards working?
QAA has launched a major stage in a project looking at how the tools used by UK universities and colleges to set and maintain quality and standards are working. The tools, known collectively as the Academic Infrastructure, were created to give all institutions a shared framework for setting, describing and assuring the quality and standards of their degrees and other higher education courses.

QAA strengthens its guidance on student employability
QAA has strengthened its guidance which helps UK universities and colleges produce graduates equipped to meet the demands of the changing employment market. The revised Code of practice, Section 8: Career education, information, advice and guidance covers the entire student life cycle – from pre-admissions through to graduation and beyond – making sure that career information, advice and guidance is available and tailored to the needs of students at every point at which they may need it.

QAA works with higher education institutions to support the experiences of disabled students
QAA has today published a revised section of its Code of practice which covers how UK universities and colleges make their courses and premises accessible to disabled students. The Code of practice, Section 3: Disabled students, is intended to help institutions ensure that disabled students have an opportunity to participate fully in all aspects of university life.

QAA has appointed a new student Board member. Alex Smith is the Academic Affairs Officer at the University of Leicester Students’ Union and took up his position as QAA Board member at the beginning of the year.

Students to be better prepared by higher education to meet employers’ needs
A report published today by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) shows that higher education institutions in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are successfully responding to the needs of employers and, by becoming more flexible on where and the way they offer their courses, are prepared to meet anticipated challenges in the future.

Challenges and opportunities ahead for higher education in further education colleges
A conference to reflect on the success of higher education in further education colleges and the challenging future ahead was held by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) last week. Over 160 delegates attended ‘Higher Education Further: Looking forward: policy, strategy and practice’ to explore the current and rapidly changing environment facing the higher education in further education sector.

Tri-partite Memorandum of Understanding ‘good news for Wales’
Three of the organisations that ensure and oversee aspects of quality in Wales’ universities have today signed an agreement that commits them to closer working together. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed in Cardiff by QAA's Chief Executive Anthony McClaran, Professor Philip Gummett, Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) and Dr Bill Maxwell, Her Majesty's Chief Inspector for Education and Training in Wales.

Event to look forward to future of higher education in further education
A biennial conference, ‘Higher Education Further 2010 Looking forward: policy, strategy and practice', that will examine policy initiatives relevant to higher education in further education colleges in 2010 is taking place this Friday January 29. Organised jointly by the Higher Education Academy and QAA, the conference aims to bring together senior policy makers and strategists from higher and further education who can help colleges make sense of the current and rapidly changing environment.

QAA paper reflects the importance of students and institutions working in partnership
QAA has published a think-piece exploring the nature of students’ relationships with their institutions, written by Wes Streeting, President of the National Union of Students (NUS), and Graeme Wise, Political Officer at NUS. The paper supports a ‘community of practice’ approach – where students, academics and university leaders build relationships and work together to identify and achieve mutual goals.

QAA today welcomed the Government’s announcement on the higher education framework, Higher Ambitions. Anthony McClaran, QAA Chief Executive, said: ‘The framework challenges QAA to develop further its work in three key areas: the student experience of higher education; public assurance of quality and standards; and robust arrangements for dealing with complaints.
