QAA reports positive outcomes from its review of research degree programmes

Research degree programmes are well managed, according to reports launched today by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) at the UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE) winter conference in York.

The outcomes of the review of research degree programmes in which QAA surveyed 114 higher education institutions in England and Northern Ireland and 10 in Wales are published in two reports, one for England and Northern Ireland and one for Wales.

The overall picture emerging from the outcomes of the review is highly positive, with institutions demonstrating good levels of engagement with QAA’s Code of practice for postgraduate research programmes, and offering many examples of good practice.

Peter Williams, Chief Executive of QAA, says: ‘These outcomes show that universities are taking good care of their postgraduate research students.  This represents an improvement on past indicators and should greatly benefit these students. The process of reviewing postgraduate research programmes will be fully integrated in future into our institutional audit process in England and Northern Ireland.’
