QAA defines the content of criminology degrees

The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) has published a new honours degree subject benchmark statement for criminology.

The new subject benchmark statement, developed by experts through consultation with the sector, sets out the expectations and characteristics of criminology degree programmes. It describes the range of knowledge, skills, abilities and understanding that an honours degree graduate in a criminology-related subject should be able to demonstrate.

Subject benchmark statements are intended to assist with programme design, delivery and review of the subject in higher education institutions. They may also be of interest to prospective students and employers who are seeking information about the nature and standards of awards in a given subject or subject area.

QAA has worked with the higher education sector to establish the Academic Infrastructure, which provides a means of describing academic standards in UK higher education. The main parts are the subject benchmark statements, frameworks for higher education qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and in Scotland, and programme specifications, that are used to describe standards of awards, and also the 10 sections of the Code of practice for the assurance of academic quality and standards in higher education.

Around 50 honours degree subject benchmark statements can be found on the QAA website at www.qaa.ac.uk/academicinfrastructure/benchmark/honours
