Academic review, introduced in 2001, is the subject-level review process used for higher education institutions in Scotland. Since 2003, the process has only been applied in selected higher education colleges.

Available to an institution with provision judged by the reviewers to be 'failing' in the quality of learning opportunities, and/or provision in which the reviewers have 'no confidence' in the academic standards
